Charlotte Barkla is a Brisbane-based writer who worked as a civil engineer and physics teacher before rediscovering her love for children’s literature. She now writes picture books, middle-grade fiction and feature articles.

Charlotte’s debut picture book, All Bodies are Good Bodies was published in 2020. It has since been translated in Italian, Turkish, Slovenian and Romanian, as well as released in the UK. English-language rights have also been sold in China.

The first two novels in Charlotte’s middle-grade series, Edie’s Experiments, were also published in 2020. The first book has been translated in Turkish, and the second book was shortlisted for the 2021 Environment Award for Children’s Literature.

Charlotte’s fourth children’s book, From My Head to My Toes, I Say What Goes, was published in February 2022 and her fifth children’s book, another picture book, will be published in 2024.

As a former teacher, Charlotte is an experienced speaker and workshop presenter. She loves sharing her passion for science, creativity and stories with children of all ages.

“It was a pleasure to have Charlotte speak our students. Both teachers and children were engaged during the sessions, and excited afterwards to read her books. They also loved the mini science experiment she slipped in to the talks. She inspired the students to not only dive into her stories but to think of ways to create their own. Charlotte was very professional and easy to work with, and I would recommend her to any school looking for an inspiring author visit.”
Peter Carnavas, Teacher Librarian, St Andrew’s Anglican College

“This week guest author Charlotte Barkla inspired and nurtured the creative minds of our Year 5 and 6 students and encouraged our budding writers. Through the sharing of her own writing process she ignited a spark in each participant, motivating them to explore their own creativity and dive headfirst into the world of writing. Charlotte helped the students set their scenes, develop their characters, and showed them how to craft an absorbing story. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking guidance and inspiration in the world of storytelling.”
Mrs Marie Miegel, Head of Library K–12, The Glennie Schoo

“Last Friday, we welcomed author Charlotte Barkla to our school to talk to the students about her books and what it means to be an author.  It was a wonderful presentation for the children – they were very engaged and Charlotte did a great job of sharing her experiences and knowledge. We would recommend Charlotte to any schools who want an engaging and interactive experience for their students.”

It is 1925 and Bert Mueller and his German-Australian family have moved from Ipswich to their new house at 11 Ruby Road. Bert’s father has been deported to Germany after the Great War, and with Dad still absent, Bert is unsure about moving away. But the city means opportunity and jobs for his mother and older siblings. And for the grown-ups , it also means fun – dressing up, going out, and all that jazz. Bert loves jazz too, but he’s too young for the clubs, and instead his time is spent at his new school where the kids play cricket, not music.

But with the help of a Gramophone, Bert has a solution. He will start his own jazz club, and 11 Ruby Road has the perfect spot to host it. But as prejudice about Bert and his German family start to affect their new life, Bert has to find a way to save his jazz club and his family.
